A 1957 view of downtown Mt. Pleasant at the Main Street intersection looking east on Broadway. "The business section, one of the main focal points of a town, also plays an important part in the 'big switch.' The old ginger-bread exteriors of Mt. Pleasant's shopping center have been replaced by new expanses of gleaming plate glass and modern fronts. Until recently all attention was centered on the downtown area with little regard to outlying property. Now, with the building of a new million dollar high school (picture of the then new 1957 is version below) to the south of the business district, more and more concerns are centering their business around this area. Because the high school was formerly located near the center of the town, many merchants profitied from student business. However, now that the school has moved to the south, it is expected that the town will expand in that direction." --Picture & Text from the 1957 Derrick
Picture of pre-1957 Mt. Pleasant High School from 1956 Derrick Yearbook. "The ivy-covered building on the corner of Fancher and Wisconsin streets has served the community of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, faithfully for forty-nine years as a senior high school. Because the school is now serving its last year in this capacity, the staff of the 1957 Derrick wish to honor the high school by dedicating the yearbook to 'the old school'. Because of the need for a new school with added room and modern facilities, the citizens of Mt. Pleasant voted to build a new high school for their youth. The octagon-shaped building will be ready for use in the fall of '57. Because of this, 'old' M.P.H.S. is involved in the 'big switch.' The 'big switch' entails moving the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades to a new location. This will change Mt. Pleasant's school system from a 6-2-4 to a 6-3-3 system. It will be the first time in the city's history that this system has been used." --Text from the 1957 Derrick.
"On May 24, 1957, the student body of M.P.H.S. got their first close-up look at the new high school. At eleven o'clock on that Friday morning all classes were excused so that all might have an opportunity to attend the open house at the new building. Most students attended the event with great anticipation, and all came home with the realization that their fondest hopes and dreams for a new school had come true. Guided tours were conducted through the various sections of the new high school by the class of '58. Each guide described the attributes in his wing of the building." --Picture & Text from 1957 Derrick
