| Mt. Pleasant History Downtown Borden Plant Approved for MP City Hall Relocation.. Mt. Pleasant voters approved a plan Nov. 8 2005 to seek the historic Borden Condensory building on West Broadway as a new city hall plus sell the current city hall on North Main, reports the 11/09/2005 Mount Pleasant Morning Sun. Kay Ann Krapohl-Smith, 67, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at the Hospice House in Mt. Pleasant. Funeral services for Kay were held at First United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 9th at 11 a.m. with Rev. John Boley and Rev. Melody Olin officiating. Interment followed in the Riverside Cemetery. The family received friends on Friday, August 8th from 4-8 p.m. at Clark Family Funeral Chapel and on Saturday, August 9th at 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Pleasant Area Community Foundation – Kay Smith Memorial Fund. Envelopes were available at the church. Kay was born on July 1, 1941 in Detroit, the daughter of Robert and Geraldine (Oviatt) Krapohl. She received a bachelor degree in Journalism from The University of Michigan. Kay was a previous owner of Smith Communications, part owner of Krapohl Ford-Lincoln-Mercury, co-owner of Kopy Korner in Mt. Pleasant and Big Rapids, writer in Public Relations at Morbark Industries and for the Guildhall Corporation in Copenhagen, Denmark and a Technical Writer for Health Systems Associates in Ann Arbor. Kay was a secretary and executive board member for Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation, past public relations chairperson, Women’s Intitiative fund honorary chairperson and co-founder, Board Member/treasurer for Michigan Hemingway Society, Trustee for Art Reach Board of trustees, past board member for the Wesley Foundation, CMU, Chairperson for Central Michigan Community Hospital Advisory Taskforce, member of Vision Group, Morning Sun Editorial Board and Big Rapids Women’s Caucus. Kay was also a past member of the Pardee Cancer Treatment Fund, past chairperson of Administrative Council at Coomer United Methodist Church, past member of Art Reach Anniversary Celebration Committee, Past President and founding member of Hospice of Central Michigan. She was past president of Art Reach of Mid Michigan and also served on the committee which founded Art Reach and purchased its building and she was past president of Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce and was the first woman president, founded its Ambassador Club and received award for setting record in member recruitment. Kay was past Vice-Chairperson for Mt. Pleasant City Charter Commission, rewriting City Charter, past board member of Central Michigan Community Hospital Auxiliaries, past board member of United Way of Mecosta County and past member of CMCH Advanced Life Support Fund Drive Board, Central Michigan Community Hospital Ball Committee, Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizen Committee, Junior Achievement Advisor at Saginaw-Chippewa Indian Tribe, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Committee in Big Rapids and she was the recipient of the Mt. Pleasant 2006 Citizen of the Year Award, a founding member of the League of Women Voters in Mt. Pleasant, organizer for the Women’s Initiative and she volunteered to help plan the hospital ball for Central Michigan Community Hospital, over the years. Kay was survived by her children, Mark Howard (Shelly) Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Mary Beth (Chris) Murphy of North Wales, PA and Angela Kay (Ben) Simpson of Cambridge, England; grandchildren, Alec, Samuel and Hayden Smith and Connor and Trevor Murphy and sister, Barbara (Paul) Birckner. | [Reprinted with permission from the Lux-Moody-Wolfel Funeral Home of Alma, Michigan.] (September 2, 1940 - November 6, 2008) Elsie M. Simmons, 68, of Pine Stump Junction north of Newberry, died Thursday morning November 6, 2008 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette. Born September 2, 1940 in Isabella County, MI, daughter of the late John & Evelyn (Lilly) Detzler, Elsie was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School in Mt. Pleasant. In addition to being a devoted homemaker raising her children, she formerly owned and operated Oil City Small Mall in Oil City for several years. Elsie and her husband moved to Pine Stump Junction in the late 1980's where they owned and operated their business until present. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, camping and, most importantly, spending time with her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Elsie is preceded in death by her brother Joe. Survivors include her loving husband Scott of Pine Stump Junction; children Mark (Rita) of Cynthiana, KY, Matt (Jennifer) of St. Louis, MI, Mike (Christine) of Alma and Mitchell (Rose) of Pine Stump Junction; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brother Chris of FL and sisters Judy of Alma, Violet of FL, Patti of FL and Rosemary of Alma. Per request, cremation services were accorded. A gathering of family and friends took place Friday November 14, 2008 from 5-8 pm at the Lux-Moody-Wolfel Funeral Home, Alma.
