Mt. Pleasant Today Photo Series
The current Mt. Pleasant High School dedicated in 2000 and built over the site of the 1957 version of the high school demolished after 1999.
When the current Mt. Pleasant High School was dedicated a time capsule from the previous 1957 High School was opened.  In it were news clippings with headlines noting how difficult it was to get the 1957 school built, taking four elections before it was approved.
The current MPHS sign in front of the high school, "Home of the Oilers."
A working oil well just north of nearby Rosebush which is five miles north of Mt. Pleasant.
These are the remnants of the old Leonard Oil Refinery in Alma 15 miles south of Mt. Pleasant.  Demolition was underday in 2003.
The Pixie restaurant on North Mission.  One of the hangouts for Class of 1959 students when it was a drive-in and it is still a popular place more than 40 years later.
Mt. Pleasant Town Center.  At Main looking west along Broadway (on the left).
The Korean War Memorial in the Mt. Pleasant Town Center.  The "Freedom Is Not Free" phrase mirrors the same phrase inscribed on the national Korean War Memorial near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.
The Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort is one of the largest with 4500 slot machines and a 500 room hotel with a conference center, pool, and beautiful grounds.
The old city water tower on the north side of town just off Pickard.  It was there when we were in school in the 50's and it is still there.
The Mill Pond area used to be a swamp and a pond.  In the winter it was used for skating by the daring in decades past since moving water creates thin ice.

Island Park, long a central focus of city recreation, includes a skate park where the old swimming pool was located.  Tennis courts are there as they were 50 years ago.
The old Borden milk plant on West Broadway not far from the heart of old downtown.  The plant has been closed for decades.
Island Park is surrounded by the Chippewa River flowing through the heart of Mt. Pleasant.  Facilities include the skate park above, lighted softball fields and tennis courts and lighted basketball courts.
A peaceful scene along the Chippewa River on the south side of Island Park.  The railroad bridge is barely visible in the background.
The Michigan Vietnam Memorial on the north side of Island Park.

Central Michigan University's Warriner Hall, a longtime community and campus landmark, is located in the center of the original old campus area which was bounded on the south by Preston Road years ago.
Grawn Hall, adjacent to Bellows Street, today houses CMU's College of Business Administration.  The building was remodeled in 1965 for business college use.  Grawn Hall is Central's oldest, opening in 1915 as the Science and Agriculture Building.

Jon's Drive-In on South Mission as it appeared in 1999.  This view is looking south.  The restaurant has changed very little since it was built back in the late 1950's about the time that the  new 1957 version of Mt. Pleasant High School opened a few blocks to the east.
A view east on Preston Road within the Central Michigan University campus.  This is in front of the Bovee Center and Bookstore.  The Charles V. Park library at right (south) was under construction in 1999.  The new library today includes state of the art technology-based services plus space for up to 1.3 million print volumes.
Looking south in the central mall area of the original old CMU campus.  Warriner Hall is faintly visible in the background.  A portion of Grawn Hall housing the College of Business is on the right.
